SEO for tradesmen: websites and local search for the trades

SEO for tradesmen is mostly local. A Google Business Profile that earns a place in the map results, a website with a page for each job and town you cover, and reviews from real customers. I build the website and do the SEO as one plan, from Tunbridge Wells, for tradespeople across Kent and Sussex.

How customers find a tradesperson on Google

Three places, and a different job to do in each.

The map results

For searches like 'electrician near me', Google shows a map with three businesses first. Those places come from your Google Business Profile, its categories, your reviews and how close you are. Your website supports it, but the profile does the work.

The standard results

For specific searches such as 'boiler installation cost' or 'loft conversion Tonbridge', Google lists web pages. A page for each job and town, written for the person searching, is what competes here.

Directories and ads

Checkatrade, MyBuilder and paid adverts sit above and around both. They can bring work, but you rent the lead. Your own pages and profile keep working for as long as you maintain them.

By trade

Every trade searches differently. Pick yours for the pages, proof and questions that fit.

electricians

I design and build websites for electricians and electrical contractors. Each one is planned around the jobs you want more of, the towns you cover and the proof a customer checks before they ring.

plumbers

I design and build websites for plumbers, heating engineers and gas engineers. The site is planned around the work that pays, whether that is boiler installations, bathrooms or emergency callouts, and the towns you want it in.

builders

I design and build websites for builders and building contractors. A building firm is judged on its finished work, so the site is built around your projects, shown properly, and an enquiry form that filters for the jobs you want.

SEO for tradesmen: questions answered

Straight answers on cost, timing and what you need to give me.

What is SEO for tradesmen?

It is the work that makes a tradesperson appear when local customers search Google, mainly in the map results and for specific job and town searches. It combines a Google Business Profile, a website with a page for each job and town, reviews from real customers and sound technical basics.

Is SEO worth it for a one-man trade business?

Often, yes, because the customers who search for a job in your town are already close to hiring. For a sole trader in a smaller town, the pay monthly Growth plan, which includes Google Business Profile setup and a monthly SEO health check, can be enough. I will tell you plainly if it is not.

How much does SEO for a tradesperson cost?

Pay monthly websites start at £79 a month plus VAT on Starter (£249 setup), £119 on Growth (£349 setup) and £169 on Pro (£499 setup). Hosting, SSL, updates and support are included. There is a 6-month minimum term, then it rolls monthly. A fuller SEO retainer for a local business typically runs from £500 to £2,000 a month depending on competition, and I start with a free audit so you can see what is needed first.

Why not just use Checkatrade, MyBuilder or Bark?

Directories are useful, but they rent you leads and show your competitors beside you. Your own site and Google Business Profile are assets you keep. Many tradespeople use both, and aim to depend less on the directories over time.

How long does it take to start ranking?

Months rather than weeks. Map results can move sooner because they depend on your profile and reviews. Standard results usually take longer. I will not promise a position or a date, and I will show you what has changed each month.

Do you work outside Tunbridge Wells?

Yes. I am based in Tunbridge Wells and work with tradespeople across Kent and Sussex, and further afield by call when the brief is clear.
